Educational Objectives:
At the completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
1. Articulate aging-related issues of substance and medication abuse/misuse, with cultural awareness regarding cohorts of baby boomers vs. current older persons.
2. Describe why the issues of substance and medication abuse/misuse in older adults are hidden and complex problems.
3. Identify substance and medication abuse/misuse prevention, screening, intervention and treatment models with integrated approaches that work with older adults.
4. Differentiate various types of elder abuse, their incidence, and their warning signs.
5. Define the current reporting requirements and resources.
6. Identify prevention, screening, and intervention models for elder abuse.
Continuing Education Credits Applied For:
Continuing Education Credits for Psychologists:
Approval to offer 4 continuing education (CE) credits for psychologists has been applied through the Penn State Consortium. The Penn State Consortium, consisting of the Department of Psychology, College of the Liberal Arts; the Programs in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology, College of Education; and the Counseling and Psychological Services Internship Center, is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Penn State Consortium maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
LSW (PA SBSWE Licensed Social Workers in Pennsylvania):
When approved, this program is offered for 4 hours of social work continuing education through co-sponsorship of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work, a Council on Social Work Education-accredited school and, therefore, a PA pre-approved provider of social continuing education. PSNA (Nursing):
The Pennsylvania State University School of Nursing is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the PA State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Participants will be awarded a maximum of 4 contact hours for attending this workshop (pending).
Full attendance at the workshop is required to receive CE credits or hours for psychologists, social workers, and nurses. Partial credit will not be awarded. Late arrivals or early departures will preclude awarding of CE credits or hours.

Exploration of the challenges of substance and medication abuse/misuse among current older persons and the aging baby boomers; presentation of the complexities of these problems due to age-related physiological, cognitive, and emotional issues and co-occurring medical disorders; and identification of common prevention, screening, intervention, and treatment programs for older adults.

Training in understanding various types of elder abuse and their warning signs; reporting requirements and resources; and identifying prevention, screening, and intervention models for elder abuse.
Content for this presentation was prepared by:
Noel Ballentine, MD, FACP, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine Geriatrics Program at the Penn State Milton Hershey Medical Center. He has received recognition for his presentations on Elder Abuse to physicians at national conferences, and has been awarded recognition for being part of the Transitioning Elders Across the Continuum of Healthcare Team Program, which has contributed to hospital-wide protocols.
Carol Hancock Gold, PhD, Senior Research Associate in the Gerontology Center of the Pennsylvania State University. She has been a co-investigator of many research studies focused on medication issues of older persons in the PACE program, including alcohol and drug interactions, intentional and non-intentional medication compliance, and use of psychotropic medication by rural vs. non-rural women in Pennsylvania.
Ms. Linda Shumaker, RN, MA, is a registered nurse currently serving as Training Coordinator of the Pennsylvania Behavioral Health and Aging Coalition. She has extensive clinical experience working in community mental health, geriatric assessment teams and long-term care. In addition, she has been an instructor of psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine. She has served as a founding member and Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Behavioral Health and Aging Coalition, as a member of the Older Adult Committee of Pennsylvania Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Planning Council, and as a member of the Long Term Care Subcommittee of the Medical Assistance Advisory Committee.
Margaret E. Hanna, Med, Executive Director of the Bucks County Drug & Alcohol Commission, Inc. , has had 36 years of work experience in this field. She has worked on statewide and national projects, providing training in many settings on Older Adults and Substance Misuse, Abuse and Dependency, and Gambling Addictions.
